It is more important than ever to understand how election laws impact local, state, and federal elections. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a variety of changes were made to voting procedures across the country. These changes—such as increased use of mail-in ballots, voting by overseas citizens under UOCAVA, unattended ballot drop boxes, extended ballot counting periods, electronic voting systems, county-wide voting centers, the absence of voter ID requirements in some states, and questions about voter eligibility—have raised concerns for many about the integrity and fairness of the election process.
Today, national election outcomes are increasingly influenced by administrative practices and procedural changes in a handful of key states. Now is the time for all of us to educate ourselves and others about how our election systems function, identify potential vulnerabilities, and advocate for improvements where needed.
